The Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster was first recorded in 1770 and were later kept and bred as laboratory animals in Germany by Klaus Hofmann in the 1960s. The majority of Dwarf Winter White Hamsters kept in captivity today are descended from this stock.

The Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster was introduced into UK laboratories in the 1970s and was introduced into the UK pet market in 1978.
